Rotterdam Lloyd menu cards

— Envelope with six menu cards from the Rotterdam Lloyd shipping company, 1939.

Each menu features an island in the former Dutch East Indies; Bali, Borneo, Celebes, Java, Sumatra, Papua (New Guinea). And on the cover of the envelope a picture of the Borobudur temple in Java.

The colorful lithographs are made by Emmanuel Gaillard, a French designer who worked from 1927 to 1939 at the Amsterdam printing house Van Leer & Co. Gaillard also designed many posters and advertisements for tourism, various shipping companies and the Royal Dutch Airlines (KLM). His colorful art deco designs always look fresh and modern. In 1939 he returned to France to focus mainly on film posters.
